　　美国伦理爱情长篇连续剧《再续前缘》(Once and Again)，女主角莎拉华德(Sela Ward)对女儿说了这句话：“ I had this huge crush on him.”

　　这是目前在英美都很流行的口语表达法(colloquial expression)。女主角知道在念中学的女儿与一名黑人同学谈恋爱，于是与她谈心事，承认自己念书时恋上了学校里的美式足球队队长，说：“I had this huge crush on him”（我当时非常爱他。） 可不要误解为把他压碎哟。句中的huge是强调语气的修饰语，原句是：have a crush on sb（爱上某人）。

　　女主角讲那句用了修辞学的加枝添叶法，相等于源出英国的片语nuts about/crazy about。

用地道英语表达：“我想我很爱你”，可以说：I think I'm nuts about you.

 

　　我们再玩“地道英语小测试”游戏好吗？

　　女角甲：He has eyes for you.

　　女角乙：Really? I get a kick out of him too.

　　请猜一猜这两句话的意思。

 

　　女角甲：He has eyes for you.（他被你吸引住了。）

　　注：句中的have eyes for是流行的口语表达法，可解作“喜欢”、“注意”、“对……感兴趣”。

　　女角乙：Really? I get a kick out of him.（真的吗？我跟他在一起时也蛮开心的。）

　　注：句中的get a kick out of sb是近年在美国相当流行的口语，新得连在英汉大词典也查不到。现在引用英文口语辞典的释义让大家加深印象：If someone or something gives you a kick, it makes you feel very excited or very happy; an informal use: I got a kick out of seeing my boyfriend.

　　这个例句的意思是：我见到男朋友时很开心。大家不要把女角说的这句话误解为“我给他踢了一脚”哟。

　　希望大家记住：英文习语（包括口语、俚语、谚语）绝大部分都不可以按字面直解！

英语中"两"的表达法

      英语中能够表示"两"的词语很多，但其含义各不相同，实际用法各有千秋。现将"两" 的各个表达 形式归纳如下：

 

(一) Both表示"俩；两者；双方"，有强调意义，要重读。

Eg. Both sides of the paper were covered with writing.

这张纸两面都写满了字。

Eg. I can do it both ways.

两种方法我都能做。

 

(二) two，twice表示数量、次数 "两；再次"。

Eg. There is an interval of ten minutes between two classes．

两节课间隔十分钟。

Eg. I have been to the countryside twice.

我去过农村两次。

 

(三) couple, a couple of表示"一对；一双；三两个"。

Eg. The young couple get along quite happily．

小两口过得挺和美。

Eg. a couple of years

两三年

Eg. Let't leave it for a couple of days．

这事过两三天再说。

 

(四) double表示"双倍的；双重的；两用的"。

Eg. We can't pay double of this amount．

我们不能付双倍的数目。

Eg. a double advantage

一举两得

Eg. A couch performs a double service.

躺椅可以坐卧两用。

 

(五) few，a few 表示"几个；两三个；不多"。

Eg. I'd like to say a few words about it．

对这事我想说两句。

Eg. every few minutes (hours， days)

每两三分钟(小时，天)

Eg. There is so much to do that these few people can hardly cope with it．

这么多事情这两三个人真干不了。

 

(六) either表示"两者之中任何一个"，用于否定句、疑问句和肯定句。

Eg. I believe either method will work．

我看两种方法中的那一种都行。

Eg. Have you seen either of the two students?

你看见两个学生之中任何一个了吗?

Eg. Either of them knows English．

他们两人任何一个都懂英语。

 

(七) neither表示"两者都不"。

Eg. In neither case can I agree.

两种情形我都不能同意。

Eg. Neither of them wants to stop for a rest．

他们俩人谁也不愿意停下来休息。

 

(八) between表示"两者之间；彼此之间"。

Eg. Do you know the difference between the two verbs "bring" and "take"?

你知道"bring"和"take"这两个动词之间的区别吗?

Eg. The Mediterranean Sea is between Europe and Africa.

地中海位于欧非两洲之间。

 

(九) bi-=twice，two; 表示"二；两；双；重"。

bilingual 讲两国语言的 bilateral 双边的

bimonthly 每两月的 biannual 一年两次的

 

"两"的其它译法还有：

Eg. He cut the apple in half．

他把苹果切成了两半。

Eg. It's all right with me whether I go or not．

我去不去两可。

Eg. He's had drop too much．

他多喝了两盅。

Eg. I feel it hard to please either party．

我感到两头为难。
